Chakalaka & Pap Recipe

Irene Bongi Gwala shows us how to make chakalaka & pap. She has a bubbly personality and is a joy to be around.

Ingredients

3 Grated Carrots3 Teaspoon, A1 Mix Masala (Mild)
1 Chopped Onion1 Can, Baked Beans
3 Grated TomatoKnorrox Chicken Stock Cube
1 Chopped Green PepperOil
2 Teaspoon, TurmericSalt

Chakalaka Preparation

  1. Heat the oil and add the chopped onion.
  2. When the onion is becoming translucent, add the chopped green pepper.
  3. Add the masala & turmeric.
  4. Add the grated tomato.
  5. Add the grated carrots.
  6. Drain the gravy from the baked beans and mix it with the Knorrox cube.
  7. Allow the carrots to cook for a bit and then add the drained baked beans.
  8. Add the Knorrox stock cube mixture to the pot.
  9. Add salt as desired. (1/2 teaspoon)
  10. Keep stirring with the wooden spoon so it doesn’t burn until it’s ready.

Pap Ingredients

250g, Margarine3 cups of boiling water
500g, Maize Meal2 cups of cold water

Pap Preparation

  1. Add 3 cups of water to a pot and bring it to a boil.
  2. Add 250g of margarine to the boiling water.
  3. Add 2 cups of cold water to a mixing bowl.
  4. Add 500g of maize meal to the mixing bowl with cold water and stir it while removing all the lumps.
  5. Add the maize meal mixture to the pot once the margarine has melted.
  6. Stir the pot and make sure that there are no lumps. It should take 10 minutes, stir regularly.
  7. Add salt to taste
